Transformation
Class 10: Optional Math
Transformation, Combined Transformation, Inversion Transformation and Inversion Circle, Transformation using Matrix
Transformation
A transformation is a way to change the position, shape, or size of a figure. It helps us move objects in a plane without changing their properties. The main types of transformations are:
1. Reflection – Flipping a shape over a line.
2. Rotation – Turning a shape around a fixed point.
3. Translation – Moving a shape without rotating or flipping it.
4. Scaling (Dilation) – Changing the size of a shape while keeping its proportions.
Example Question
A point A(3, 4) is translated 2 units right and 3 units up. What is the new position?
Solution:
New position = (3+2, 4+3) = A’(5,7)
Combined Transformation
When we apply two or more transformations to a shape, it is called a combined transformation. The order of applying transformations can sometimes change the final result.
Example
1. Reflect a triangle over the x-axis.
2. Then, translate it 3 units to the right.
This is a combined transformation where both reflection and translation are applied.
